Autonomous Cars and Hacking

Posted by admin at June 11, 2014

CNN recently published an article on the safely implementation of autonomous cars specifically how it will be affected by hacking. As cars become the next frontier to be fully computerized and app-ified, hackers can break into a car’s system and perform malicious actions like steal data, locate the driver or worse cause a car crash.

This could be an issue of concern. Imagine a car suddenly breaking down at top-speed and crashing. Or even more subtle crimes like locating a car user’s driving habits, where the driver has been during the day and subsequently locate where he or she lives, essentially spying on these individuals. This is the same problem currently experienced on PC and mobile devices, with waves of threats, malware and viruses assaulting us from all sides, computerizing cars will open transportation to these threats. The fully autonomous cars especially, Google’s new cars without sterling wheels, the driver is completely without control. Even cars that are not autonomous will share the same roads and facilities with theses next generation tech. Any threat to the autonomous cars is a threat to the enter transport system as a whole. I love the autonomous car trend and the computerization of everything so I think special investment towards wireless security is essential.
