Business success: When the Boss is the best Salesman

Posted by admin at May 12, 2014

We tend to assume that the boss of a company can always hire and supervise a sales team and equip them with everything they need to function and the business will be able to make sales. That’s not entirely true. The success of a business lies in the ability of a leader to be able to communicate ideas to his team: this is a classic example of salesmanship. /The Boss should be the key marketer and the first target market is not even the customers but the team!

The concept of Sales or its true form, Marketing, is just communication of ideas to a group of people, period. To be able to sell an idea, you have to understand the rudiments of communication: knowing your customer, what they want, their habits and how your product can affect them and being able to use this information to sway them to your product… Basic communication 101. The leader of a team should put in effort to do this for the team to succeed.

Now, don’t get me wrong, a business can survive by hiring a top-notch team of experienced marketers and sales force, but it can only achieve greatness if the leader or boss embodies both the passion and the marketing skills to drives its products and services to the market. Robert Kyosaki, the author of the bestseller “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, has always emphasized the need for a team leader, the person with the passion, to also possess the skill to communicate and sell. I have seen this in action working in a specialized industry where client group sizes are small and to be able to reach a wide audience, you need to talk to a lot of groups. The executive director of the organisation was the one who was invited to a lot of meetings and he took every opportunity available to speak about our products and services. He was that good that not only did he reach a wide audience in little time, but that our establishment became known for our software services within the African region.

Taking from this example, I will have to take some training in communication and professional public speaking and presentation. Next, imbibe the culture of sharing ideas, yes, the purpose of this blog, and also to continue speaking till I am heard.
